NYU Russian Club Announcements

A series of event posters created for NYU’s Russian Club, using defining cultural references reimagined in bold, minimal visuals. Each design captures attention while subtly reflecting the spirit of Russian art, literature, or folklore — turning announcements into cultural touchpoints.

Welcome (Back)!

For the first event of the academic year, I chose a well-known painting, The Swan Princess (1900) by Michael Vrubel. The woman is looking at the viewer and invites them to join her in whatever journey she is about to take. In our case, this was a great visual for inviting both new and returning members in an elegant yet familiar way.

Movie Night

Since the film we were to watch is set in the heart of Saint Petersburg in the early 2000s, it was more than appropriate to use a photo of the city for this particular poster.

Halloween

This poster presents a Russian folklore-inspired take on Halloween, evoking iconic characters and imagery. The painting shown is Alyonushka (1881) by Viktor Vasnetsov; she is not a specific heroine, but a figure who embodies the sorrowful, orphaned girl found throughout Russian fairy tales.

Happy New Year

This poster draws on Viktor Vasnetsov’s Snow Maiden (1899) to evoke the magic of a Russian winter and invite students to the Russian Club’s New Year celebration.

Maslenitsa

Departing from the usual sun and crepes, this Maslenitsa poster captures the warmth and festivity of the holiday through a playful, nostalgic symbol — a candy rooster on a stick. It marks the end of winter and the joyful welcome of spring in a fresh, yet familiar way.

Easter Celebration

Without traditional religious symbols, this poster utilizes verba — willow branches closely tied to Russian Easter — to subtly and elegantly evoke the holiday’s spirit. This is a quiet nod to renewal and tradition.

Brighton Beach Trip

Evoking both the seaside atmosphere and the cozy nature of an old wooden house, this poster aims to create a home-like feeling, as if the club's members were about to visit their grandparents in the countryside.
